Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

1. Both Macbeth and The Importance of Being Earnest employ heightened language (language that is more complex, beautiful, and/or “higher” than everyday language).The characters of Earnest are fully aware of how witty and clever their use of language is. In the world of Macbeth, most of which is written in blank verse, the language is less self-conscious or self-aware — it is just how people speak. How does this difference of how language is used impact our response to both the language (the manner in which characters speak) and the plays overall?

2. Based on your informed opinion and analysis, identify the order of Aristotle’s elements of drama for both of these plays — and argue why you have placed language in each order.
