DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TERROR

This unit will examine the differences and similarities in domestic and international terrorism. The various ideologies and operational tactics of both types of groups will be discussed.

Ku Klux Klan: A post-Civil War American secret society advocating white supremacy.

Osama bin Laden: An Arab terrorist who established al-Qaeda.

Ted Kaczynski: Also known as the Unabomber, is an American domestic terrorist.

Timothy McVeigh: An American domestic terrorist who perpetrated the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Weathermen: An American militant radical left-wing organization.

A Comparison of Two Terrorist Groups

Create a PowerPoint presentation consisting of 8−10 slides (excluding the title slide, table of contents slide, and references slide) that meets the following requirements:

1. Research and identify two specific terrorist groups:

• One domestic terrorist group (examples: ALF, ELF, KKK, Aryan Nation, Black Liberation Army, Weathermen, Army of God)
• One international terrorist group (examples: Al Qaeda, ISIS, Hezbollah, Hamas, IRA, Japanese Red Army/JRA)

1. Assess the similarities and differences between the two groups in the following five specific areas:

• Underlying ideology of the group
• Specific goals the group is trying to achieve or grievances it is trying to redress
• Kinds of targets preferred by the group
• Specific terrorist tactics the group prefers to employ in furtherance of its goals
• The rationale used by the group to justify its terrorist acts, and to explain why it thinks these acts will facilitate achievement of its stated end goals

  • Your slide requirement is excluding your title, introduction, and reference slides.
  • Use one basic slide design and layout.
  • Limit slides to between 6 and 8 lines of content.
  • You may use pictures, charts, and graphs to supplement your material as long as they do not take up the entire slide
  • Use bullets for your main points.
  • Use speaker notes to fully explain what is being discussed in the bullet points as though you are presenting to an audience, being sure to follow the Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.)
  • Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained
  • Presentation should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful
  • Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics
  • Appropriate citation style should be followed

  You should also make sure to:

  • Use examples to support your discussion
